Mid-Air Success for Boeing Tanker
Thu December 27, 2007
The moment of truth arrived this year for the Boeing KC-767 aerial refueling tanker. During a four-hour flight over Southern California, the tanker successfully transferred 10,000 pounds of fuel to another aircraft. Prolific's technology played a key role in Boeing winning orders from both the Italian and Japanese governments.

Prolific's technology is also enabling Boeing to contend for a multi-billion dollar contract to supply these advanced KC-767 tankers to the U.S. Air Force. Dubbed the KC-X Competition, with a decision being made later this summer, Boeing is ready to compete says William Barksdale, tanker communications manager. "These [tanker air crews] depend on technology that is real. We are obviously very serious about this. The bottom line is that we believe a Boeing tanker will best meet America's national security needs for refueling and cargo."

Has this ever happened to you?

Last night I left the volume turned up and my wife woke me up in the middle night telling me that a water pipe had burst. She insisted that I go outside and turn off the water. What a hoot!

I turned the volume down and she was amazed at how fast I had fixed the plumbing!

Wed March 3, 2004
Watch this Sunday, March 7th, on ABC when the EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME CREW remodels the 'Mendoza' House.

The show's design team is lead by Ty Pennington, who developed a strong fan base on the cable hit "Trading Spaces." Was it his good looks or drill-wielding ability? Watch and find out! Other successful remodeling shows on TV remodel a room or two at a time. These guys they do a full house remodel, taking the structure down to the studs and rebuilding it in 7 short days, while the family is sent away on vacation!

One of the rooms, for the daughter, will be done in you guessed it, an underwater theme. Since real salt-water aquariums can be expensive and demanding on a young girl's time, the design team decided on not just one flat panel screen, but three! And to add that finishing realistic touch. Watch and see if your favorite Marine Aquarium fish is featured!

Prolific Publishing, Inc. unveils LifeGlobe.com
Sat April 5, 2003
Prolific Publishing, Inc. unveils www.LifeGlobe.com website to promote and support the newest hyper-real life simulator, Goldfish Aquarium.

Prolific has defined a new genre of software, and raised the bar of computer simulation with its first release--SereneScreen Marine Aquarium (www.SereneScreen.com).

The newest product, which takes on the challenge of creating the most beautiful life-like goldfish, poses the additional challenge of inventing a fluid real-time recreation of the most intricate part of goldfish, the fin tails. Planned for the first beta release in late April, are three handcrafted goldfish including the Panda Butterfly, and the Black Moor. Steadily, Prolific is planning to add subtle features to the tank, like bubble, more original goldfish, and ornaments.

SereneScreen Marine Aquarium v2.0 released!
Mon March 17, 2003
Prolific Publishing, Inc. today announced the 2.0 version release of its blockbuster hit, SereneScreen Marine Aquarium. Marine Aquarium 2.0 will be released under a new Prolific brand label, SereneScene, for the retail distribution channels. With five brilliant new fish and a brand new user interface, Marine Aquarium 2.0 is positioned to continue the phenomenon ignited by its predecessor.

The five new fish that have been added to the tank are an Emperor Angelfish, Blue Ring Angelfish, Red Fin Butterfly fish, Rock Beauty Angelfish, and Squarespot Anthias, increasing the number of fish in Marine Aquarium to 26. Users may now enjoy the expanded livestock configurations these five new fish provide.

Prolific, responding to user demand, has created a user interface that presents interesting facts about each fish. Just click on a fish and learn its name, its scientific name, where in the world you would swim into one of them, and its size and dietary habits. As with the previous version, the variable lighting, bubbles, and sound effects continue to make the SereneScene Marine Aquarium 2.0 at once fascinating, beautiful and soothing.

Marine Aquarium Shown at Computer Electronics Show
Sun January 13, 2002
SereneScreen Marine Aquarium was shown recently at the 2002 CES just before Bill Gates took stage. The crowd was comprised of the industries moguls mixed with the techno groupies and other average nerd citizens. While awaiting the arrival of the keynote speaker, Bill Gates, Microsoft attempted to impress the throng with Microsoft's stunning new triumph, SereneScreen Marine Aquarium. The program was running on three massive television screens towering high overhead, all showing the three fish version of the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium from Prolific Publishing, Inc. and Jim Sachs. Microsoft lays claim to the program since the XP version is currently included in the Windows XP plus pack from Microsoft.

Windows XP Plus! News
Tue October 23, 2001
SereneScreen Marine Aquarium will get a major boost in public exposure thanks to a licensing deal struck this summer with Microsoft. Microsoft Plus for Windows XP, the companion software to Microsoft's flagship new Windows XP operating system, will include a special 3 fish version of SereneScreen Marine Aquarium. Also, new computers from all major manufacturers that include Windows XP also have this 3 fish version of the Aquarium. All of these users will be provided an opportunity to purchase the full 20 fish version of the Aquarium.

SereneScreen Marine Aquarium Version 99L Released
Wed July 18, 2001
Prolific Publishing, Inc. releases the new 99L version of SereneScreen Marine Aquarium.

The new features include:

  • New Starfish
  • New Koran Angelfish
  • New Three-Stripe Damselfish
  • Improved Queen Angelfish
  • Improved Flame Angelfish
  • A Volume Control bar
  • Light and shadows now realistically radiate from the bubble column
  • An "EnergyStar" button so that the Aquarium prevents your monitor from going to sleep when enabled.
  • "Always on Top" changed to apply to Windowed Mode

Updated Free Demo
Sun June 3, 2001
Prolific just updated the free demo version to use the same amount of video memory as the real version. On some systems, the old demo would run, but the real version needed more RAM. This should eliminate that problem.

16:9 Widescreen Aquarium
Fri June 1, 2001
There is now a wide screen version of the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium available to Deluxe Key holders. This is a special version with 16:9 ratio resolutions for plasma displays and wide screen monitors. If you would like the wide screen version, send e-mail with your name and Deluxe Key Code (or order number) to Service@serenescreen.com, and we will reply with the download link. (Note: If you have a normal 4:3 ratio monitor, just use the regular version of the Aquarium. If you don't know if your monitor is wide screen, then it is not.)

The wide screen version is a completely separate program. It does not share Registry settings or anything else with the normal version. Because of the extra graphics, it needs more video ram than the regular version. So if you have a low-end card which can't run the regular Aquarium at a resolution higher than 800x600, the wide screen version may not work.

On a different topic, a few people seem to be a little confused about the "Always On Top" button in the Settings screen. When this is activated, the Aquarium window will always be visible on top of other windows on your desktop when in windowed mode. If you are in full screen mode, then it does nothing since the screen is already on top. As always, just press the "f" key to put the Aquarium in a window (assuming your desktop is in 16-bit color).

SereneScreen Aquarium V99K Released
Fri May 11, 2001
SereneScreen Marine Aquarium version 99K released.

The new features include:

  • New Regal Angelfish
  • New Blue Damselfish
  • Improved Picasso Triggerfish
  • An "Always on Top" button so that the Aquarium is always visible in windowed mode. (As always, press the "F" key to put the Aquarium in windowed mode.)
  • A "Don't Duplicate Random Fish" button which insures that no two random fish are the same
  • Different sound
  • Improved timing on the automatic lighting changes, so that it works the same on all processors

Prolific Publishing is now taking over this website, and the distribution of the Aquarium. This will allow me to spend more time on development, and less time looking up lost Key Codes.

If you are ordering a Key Code, it will be displayed on the last screen of the ordering process. Please write it down in case the e-mail doesn't get through. The message from Orders is only a note from the credit card company, and does not contain your Key Code.

If you ordered a Key Code, and did not see it on the screen, please send a message to Service@serenescreen.com with the details of your purchase. We will look up your records and send you your Key Code.

3D Glasses Info
Thu December 28, 2000
I have been hearing a lot about how good the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium looks with the ELSA Revelator 3D glasses, so I bought a pair. With a little tweaking of the settings, the 3D effect is really quite amazing. These glasses come with high-end nVidia cards, but can be purchased separately at many on-line retailers for about $40. Your video card and monitor must support a refresh rate of 120 fps to use these glasses. (The SereneScreen Marine Aquarium animation doesn't have to run that fast, just the monitor.)

Inside the Aquarium Fan Website Launches
Sun December 24, 2000
If you are interested in learning more about the species of fish in the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium, or adding your favorites to the wish list, go to the fan site at http://www.feldoncentral.com/Sachs/.

Many people ask what the best graphics card is for running the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium. Most high-end cards like the ATI 128-bit and Radeon, 3Dfx VooDoo cards, and nVidia TNT and GeForce cards will produce stunning performance. But the best value-per-dollar may be the nVidia Vanta LT. I've seen this card advertised on-line for as little as $32, yet it runs the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium at over 40 frames-per-second with all 7 fish turned on. This card also comes in the $700 e-Machines computers available at Costco. Note: it is EXTREMELY important to use the very latest drivers for all of these cards. The video card companies have made major changes in their drivers recently, especially for DirectX 8 support.

Just a reminder -- this web site is the only place where you can buy a legal Key Code for the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium. Computer stores and swapmeets are not allowed to sell the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium.

"About the Author" section added

Jim Sachs just spent all night putting together a new page for this site. If you are interested, click the "About the Author" on the navigation bar on the left.

  • New Wimplefish
  • Added Selection Panel to choose 7 of the 10 fish
  • Ability to save settings for sound, lights, fish, resolution, and exit-on-mouse-move.
  • Easier installation as a screensaver. Just right-click the Fish icon and select Install

Other News & Thoughts
Fri December 1, 2000
A few people also seem to think that the Aquarium is some kind of subscription service for which they would get periodic bills. The Aquarium is one self-contained file. The program is downloaded over the Internet, but once it is copied to your computer, no other Internet connection is needed. You may use the Demo version forever without registering, if you want to. If you wish register, it is a one-time charge, and once you are in our database, you may download future versions for free.

Fish-byte.com has now been officially changed to serenescreen.com. The reason for the name change will become obvious over the next few years. The fish-byte.com URL will point to the new address.

The Aquarium will soon be going through very heavy testing on a large number of configurations by a major software company, which will remain nameless (but starts with an M ). This should shake out any remaining bugs which might be lurking in Win2000 or Win ME.

A lot of people would like to see the plants and sea anenomes moving slightly. So would I! This is extremely difficult to do, but I am working on it. Many things that are already going on in the Aquarium are almost impossible. That is why you haven't seen anything like this before, even from the major programming power-houses. I am just a lone artist with no formal training in programming at all, so don't ask for too much :) Please remember that this program is in Beta-test form, and I only meant it to go out to a few dozen 3D fanatics for testing, not over a million people!

3Dfx sent me a VooDoo 5500 card, so I can do some first-hand testing. They just posted new drivers for VooDoo 4 and 5 series recently, and Aquarium owners have reported that the new drivers work very well.

I have mentioned that the Aquarium does not usually run on notebook computers, but I have found one that actually produces 20 frames-per-second at 1024x768. It's the Compaq Presario 17XL series (though any notebook with the Rage Mobility chip or the S3 Savage chip will probably work). I have also been informed the higher-end IBM notebook computers, like the A20p, work very well. The Aquarium does NOT run on Sony VAIO notebooks, and possibly the IBM Thinkpad 600. (Late news: the very latest VAIO notebooks, shipped in the last 2 months, may work.)
